Winter is approaching … let’s talk about how to make the kids as less snotty and the immune system extra awesome.

Over the years of motherhood, I have learned a thing or two from my local naturopath, GP and other health practitioners. Won’t deny I’ve watched TED talk or two * ahem * I have put together a few of my immune support go to’s to help keep your little ones healthy and harmonious in your family. They all taste nice and my own children love each one eating them. They see them as a treat and part of our normal routine.

High Vitamin C doses

Vitamin C is integral to healthy strong cells. As a baseline i give my kids 500mg a day. If anyone does happen to get a nasty cold, I up it to 1000, for adults 2000.

B Vitamins

You require B Vitamins for the body to repair itself. While you are sleeping your body is busying away repairing and creating new cells. I give the kids a multivitamin that has a decent amount of B vitamin in it. So far that is Blackmores kids Multivitamin. I myself have a gene mutation where I absorb 40% less B12 than the average person. So I have a B12 oral spray first thing in the morning. I honestly feel so exhausted without it.

Vitamin D3

Ever wondered why the kids sleep better during summer? I always put it down to having a good day out but alas it comes down to absorbing lots of Vitamin D. According to sleep specialists ( gosh i wish i could remember her name. Look up Vitamin D and REM on Youtube, you will find her ) She explained thoroughly how sleep and numerous disorders stem from Vitamin D deficiency ( MS is a classic example ) The body needs Vitamin D for it to be able to go into REM sleep. If you aren’t getting into REM, then you are not repairing. If your child is having a lot of bed wetting despite trying everything you can think of. Then this could be you answer.

Lemon water

I swear by lemon water. I read a study that lemon bind to the gastro virus. Whenever i hear about gastro going around, I squeeze a wedge of fresh lemon into my kids drink bottles and they drink it all day. Lemon is antibacterial and anti inflammatory, so its best to drink this first thing in the morning for a healthy tum. Whenever I feel like i have a sore/dry throat its usually the defence response for a virus so i get myself and the kids to have a shot of straight lemon juice. It also works wonders on ulcers.

Colloidal minerals

so this is an important one that not many know about. I have a colloidal mineral grape drink. It has allll the minerals you could think of including zinc, copper, silver, aluminium, selenium just to name a few. In a society where we wash what we eat, we do not get clay and dirt into our digestive tracts that would normally be the source of essential minerals. The kids beg for this its so yummy.

Probiotics

I’ll try and keep this short and simple. Because I could talk about this all day. If you aren’t taking probiotics. Start. You should even take a bit of probiotics with them if this is something new to you or you have needed antibiotics recently. Many health conditions are sparked by an unhealthy gut biome. Ever heard of the term leaky gut? Well thats due to a imbalance of bad bacteria and not enough good bacteria. There is even a term coined leaky brain, where bad bacteria leak from the digestive system into the brain. My kids love Kefir, which is basically yoghurt on steroids. Or you can get a powdered probiotic and mix it in water. This is one of the most underrated supplements, please start doing this.

If you start supplementing the whole families diets with these on the regular you should start to notice a difference in overall health. Since starting this routine, we have managed to not fall ill since 2018! Now of course everyone is different with many factors going on in complex systems, so please, check with your health practitioner before making any major changes. I am not a health professional but I wanted to share what have learned from others and what has been working for us. Let me know if this has been useful and share with me how your family goes over the winter!
